I think Jim may have finally hit on the reason. When our flagpole is up, the timer is set for the light to be on from dusk to dawn. That's the rule: if you fly the US flag at night, it must be illuminated. We didn't change the timer when we put up the candy cane. Therefore, it too is lit from dusk to dawn, probably the only one on the street lit up after midnight or so. That may make it a target.
ANYway, they didn't just knock it down; it got STOMPED. Even the timer was broken.
After getting angry, and then having to go out of town, when Jim got back we bought supplies and started over, again.
It's a somewhat tedious, annoying process. He decided to put a galvanized pipe inside the bottom 10 feet of the PVC pipe. If someone tries to knock it down, they'll know they hit something. It was lots of fun to drill through, too.
The pvc glue is great, though. High, high, high!
We wrapped it in red plastic ribbon
and red lights,
added the bows,

It looks really pretty at night, when

The candy can looks great WHEN IT'S NOT SMASHED TO PIECES. Oh my goodness. I'm actually surprised that Dad went through the trouble of making a new one, but I'm glad. I like the pic of him leaning on the finished product. Hey, if anyone's going to knock it over, it'd better be him, know what I'm sayin? j/k
